MITOLOGIA TAINA

TAINO MYTHOLOGY
T
There are places that were sacred to our Taino ancestors, and they continue to be so today. In our Boriken, these places are related to our ethnohistory and culture. In these sacred places our ancestors build ceremonial centers or bateyes of ingenious design, orientation and proportions to facilitate and amplify the psycho-physical effect of Atabey (Mother Earth). These sacred spaces connect humans with their creator Yaya.

Taino cosmos is divided in cycles, each with its own vital energy (cu) that flows with force. Taino mythology receives its inspiration from the trees, forests, rivers, streams, and mountains of Boriken. For our Tainos, these places possessed supernatural qualities. Those that enter into these sacred natural spaces could experience this energy in different forms: as a healing experience, a transformational experience, or as a special sensation of power or connection with nature – Yaya (Universal Power).

When man disrupts or destroys this energy flow all living things suffer. We, at Guakia Taina-ke, are concerned with the rate in which our natural and cultural resources are being destroyed in the name of progress and development. More alarming, this growth is taking place without minimum consideration for our future generation. It is unfair that our children and grandchildren must pay for the greed of others. We join our efforts with other non-profit organizations in the conservation and protection of our natural and cultural heritage - for the sake of our future generation.
